Welcome to the Underpinning Excellence in Higher Education website

Funded by HEFCE’s Leadership, Governance and Management (LGM) fund, the Underpinning Excellence project was developed to identify the key leadership, governance and management behaviours in academic departments that help to promote success. Having gathered evidence and examples of these behaviours, a toolkit has been developed, allowing academic departments to run a self-diagnostic test, assessing how they perform against the traits identified by the research.

This website allows users to:

Register
Questionnaire
Report
Dissemination
Any HEFCE-funded academic department can register for the toolkit.
Users would complete an online self-assessment questionnaire that should take between 15-20 minutes. This could be undertaken by an individual or as a departmental exercise.
The toolkit will assess your responses and compare your results to findings uncovered by the project. Utilising a range of metrics, the toolkit will provide a report that highlights areas of strength and areas which could be improved. It further provides a range of external resources that may be useful.
Users could then disseminate this report to the department or other interested parties as a means to prioritise areas for improvement or for sharing of best practice.
